About the Role

The Dean, Human Services and Community Safety is accountable for contributing to the academic well-being and growth of the college and for providing academic and administrative leadership, supervision, support and direction to the faculty, administrative staff, and support staff in the division.  The Dean is accountable for the planning, development, maintenance, and ongoing review for a cluster of diverse programs and related activities that could include apprenticeship, certificate, grad certificate, diploma and degree studies and applied research which may be on multiple campuses. The Dean is often the point of contact for the College for a variety of industry/sector relations and as such is required to maintain strong external partnerships.  The Dean is responsible for ensuring that the course/program standards conform to external accreditation and licensing requirements, are responsive/relevant to the needs of students and the community at large according to the College’s Strategic Plan. As the most senior leader at the Orillia Campus, the Dean is responsible for building strong connections in the Orillia community with municipal, industry and other community leaders. The Dean will contribute to the academic well-being of the College through effective planning, administration of the academic area’s programs and services in the portfolio in addition to promoting a culture of continuous improvement in all programs and services.

Reporting to the Vice President, Academic, the Dean will work closely with Academic Leadership Team and the Senior Management Team.

Key Accountabilities

The Dean, in consultation with administrators, faculty and external stakeholders (ie: employers), develops an operational plan which includes information on new program development, program mix and program renewal for his/her academic area. In the development of this plan, the Dean must review all options to make informed decisions or recommendations.  Consideration must be given to the viability of the programs, industry/community support, program costing and the overall program mix.  This plan is monitored and reviewed annually. The Dean also has oversight for curriculum integrity for all programs in his/her portfolio that may be delivered at other campuses and must ensure that hiring meets program requirements wherever programs are being offered.  Key responsibilities also include:

  • Responsible for developing and implementing strategic directions and vision for his/her academic area and the campus
  • Provide academic and administrative leadership for the academic area with staff such as manager(s), other managers specific to the portfolio, faculty and support staff involved in the development and delivery of all Human Services and Community Safety courses and programs offered by the College.
  • Contribute to the academic well-being of the College through effective planning, administration of the academic area’s programs and services in the portfolio.
  • Ensure that current and future training and educational needs of students are met by providing ongoing review of courses/programs. Determines the need for modification of existing courses/programs and the introduction of new courses/programs to reflect new technologies, economic and market influences, external partnerships and changing employment opportunities.
  • Contribute to the development of College Policies and operating procedures to meet the needs of students, staff, client groups, community/industry partners, government ministries/agencies.
  • Ensure the success of workplace training of students through management of internal resources and employer relations. Deliver on college retention, graduation, and student success targets.
  • Identify areas to improve KPIs and implements strategies to ensure their improvement.
  • Ensure all students have access to an experiential learning option as part of the studies.
  • Ensure all programs develop and deliver on the entrepreneurship signature learning experience.
  • Contribute to the college’s mandate for Continuing Education & Contract Training
  • Develop new programs to meet student and labour market demands.
  • Collaborate with administrative staff across the College in his/her academic leadership role to innovate and create new opportunities and to respond to a range of initiatives.
  • Participate in the development of articulation agreements or partnerships with other educational institutions or industry.
  • Promote a culture of continuous improvement in all programs and services.
  • Enhance their digital learning resources and student services to position the college for success during and on the other side of the pandemic.
  • College-wide transformation focused on elevating the college’s capacity to offer XR to students and employees.

The Dean must lead and develop a high-performance culture of all staff in their area. The Dean is also responsible for ensuring the fiscal viability of the campus and the portfolio. The Dean monitors financial contribution of entrepreneurial initiatives and ensures all programs under their purview operate within the program costing framework.  Responsibilities also include:

  • Ensure that manager, faculty, -and staff assignments are consistent with College policies, procedures, and Collective Agreements.
  • Ensure the effective use of fiscal, human, and physical resources with the school through the coordination and consolidation of budget requests and the distribution of available funds.
  • Accountable for financial planning that includes the development and ongoing monitoring of all budgets in the portfolio.
  • Maintain a high level of staff performance through effective recruiting, selecting, training, developing, and evaluating staff.
  • Monitor opportunities for and directs applications for external funding sources.
  • Facilitate agreements with external organizations to ensure most effective use of college resources and funds.

As Dean, Human Services and Community Safety Orillia Campus you will promote community ventures by forming networks and linkages.  Develop partnership arrangements with business/industry and community groups through program/service advisory committees, agreements, and projects. As well as enhancing the profile of Georgian College locally, provincially, nationally, and globally through relationship building and advocacy. The incumbent will assist Advancement and Alumni Relations in securing external funding and in the development and implementation of the partnership agreements. In addition to facilitate and implement all College-wide academic initiatives within Human Services and Community Safety.

Qualifications

To be successful for the position of Dean, you are a success driven, team builder, collaborative, and inclusive leader. You will have a combination of formal Masters education and minimum 11 years of experience. The following are an asset:

  • Several years experience providing academic leadership, demonstrated success in collaborative management, strategic planning & innovation as well as experience leading and managing change initiatives within a large, unionized environment.

  • Demonstrated understanding of and implementation of Strategic Enrolment Management initiatives including student recruitment and retention.
  • Demonstrated management skills including managing budgets and human resources.
  • Demonstrated success in establishing effective partnerships with external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated commitment to teaching excellence and quality education.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the value of applied research, innovation, and entrepreneurship.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and inclusively across academic areas for interdisciplinary programs and services.
