The University of British Columbia (UBC) is a global centre for research and teaching, consistently ranked among the 40 best universities in the world – and top 20 public universities. The University opened its Okanagan campus in 2005 as a bold new UBC presence in the interior of British Columbia, designed to deliver on the promise of a research-intensive institution purpose-built for the 21st century.

Over the past fourteen years, UBC’s Okanagan campus has developed a distinctive learning community earning national and international recognition for excellence in research and teaching. The campus is home to approximately 9,900 undergraduate and graduate students, 630 faculty members, over 600 staff, and 8 world-class Faculties and Schools. Annual research funding has increased over 90% in the last four years. With over 1,200 active research projects last year, the Okanagan campus is establishing itself as an important and respected centre of learning and research and as a driver of economic and social development in the Interior of BC.

The Deputy Vice Chancellor and Principal (DVC) provides strategic leadership to the Okanagan campus to accomplish the vision, commitments, goals, and actions as set out in the University’s strategic plan.  As an integral member of the University’s senior leadership team, the DVC supports the Board of Governors in exercising their governance responsibilities and works collaboratively with leadership and management across the University, and with key external stakeholders, to enhance student learning and research achievements on the Okanagan campus.

With primary accountability for the leadership of the Okanagan campus, the DVC’s direct reports include the Provost and Vice President Academic (Okanagan), the Vice Principal Research, as well as executive leaders for Finance & Operations, Students, Human Resources, University Relations, and Development & Alumni Engagement.

The Faculties on the Okanagan campus include Engineering, Education, Creative and Critical Studies, Arts & Sciences, Management, Health and Social Development, Graduate Studies, and the Southern Medical Program, along with research institutes related to community engaged research, healthy living, materials and manufacturing, biodiversity, and socio-economic development.

The ideal candidate is an accomplished academic with Decanal or VP leadership experience gained at a research-intensive university.  The DVC will play a critical role in advancing towards the goals set out in the recently released long-term vision, Outlook 2040, which sets out an ambitious path to nearly double the undergraduate student-body, triple the graduate student cohort, quadruple research funding, and significantly expand campus infrastructure.  In support of UBC’s vision, and to promote the overall economic and social development of the region, the DVC will be a visible leader in the community, building productive relationships with a wide range of stakeholders and partners.

UBC’s Okanagan campus is located on the ancestral and unceded territory of the Syilx Okanagan Nation. The campus sits on over 200 hectares in a region that has 5 of Canada’s largest ski resorts, 200 freshwater lakes, 30 beaches, and 2,000 hours of sunshine annually.  This role represents an outstanding opportunity to bring vision and energy to a strategic leadership position at one of the world’s top universities—at a campus that is vibrant, intimate, and actively engaged with its local community and partners.
