Your Opportunity:

Reporting to the Director, Student Services, the Manager, Student Housing, provides oversight to and management of all student housing facilities and employees. The Manager will work collaboratively to meet operational and programming goals through the continual development and implementation of current and future initiatives that meet the diverse needs of students while balancing fiscal sustainability. The Manager is responsible for ensuring students living on campus are provided with a safe, inclusive, and wellness-focused environment where students can thrive, both academically and personally.

 

Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in Education, Business Administration, Hospitality Management, or another relevant field required. Graduate degree in higher education administration, student development, counsellor education, or comparable program preferred. A minimum of five years’ progressive work experience in student housing, including live-in experience, and three years in a leadership or supervisory role. A combination of education and experience may be considered. Training in trauma informed care, cultural competency (or similar) and conflict resolution is preferred.

 

Functions and Duties:

1. Manages and responds to the day-to-day operational needs of student housing

2. Establishes goals and objectives for housing operations and student life programs in alignment with institutional plans and policies

3. Regularly reviews standards, operating procedures, systems, and services to ensure effective business practices are in place

4. Ensures student housing contracts are up-to-date, executed, and enforced consistently and fairly

5. Oversees processes and procedures related to housing applications, room assignments, and general space management and utilization

6. In collaboration and consultation with relevant stakeholders (e.g., Director of Student Services, Facilities Management, Regional Dean), ensures all housing facilities are well-maintained, attending to both urgent and planned repairs, maintenance, and renovations

7. Responsible for managing human resource requirements such as hiring, training, developing, and performance managing reporting employees, including a diverse team of Community Assistants (CAs) and volunteers; monitors work schedules and approves leaves

8. Responsible for developing and empowering leadership within team members, team development to foster a positive work environment, and mentorship of future housing professionals

9. Oversees relevant budgets; approves budget expenditures up to pre-approved sub-delegated amounts ensuring that expenditures are controlled to support the achievement of financial targets; provides strategic advice and makes recommendations to the Director on new initiatives, including income generating opportunities; creates reports and collects data to support new initiative requests and program development proposals

10. Works collaboratively to plan, administer, evaluate, and continuously improve overall services and operations through an equity, diversity, inclusion, and social justice (EDISJ) lens to provide a positive housing experience and to meet changing needs of students

11. Conducts annual surveys of student satisfaction related to facilities, staffing programs, and student development, while adhering to established research ethics and protocols

12. Oversees student housing focused recruitment initiatives including but not limited to marketing, promotion, and facility tours, in alignment with institutional recruitment efforts

13. Coordinates a comprehensive suite of student life and student support programming activities to support student development and success including social, cultural, and spiritual programs that foster student self-awareness, promote respect for EDISJ, and encourage community engagement

14. Establishes strong partnerships with the Student Life team to identify and promote opportunities for student engagement in campus activities

15. Reviews, develops, promotes, and implements policies, procedures, and training related to maintaining the safety security, and health of the entire student housing community. This includes but is not limited to:

a. emergency and crisis response and preparedness within the scope of training and expertise

b. supporting students in distress

c. responding to behaviours of concern

d. maintaining high community standards and expectations

e. conflict mediation

f. institutional policies that apply in student housing environments including the Sexual Violence and Misconduct Policy and Procedure

16. Responsible for responding to non-academic misconduct issues in student housing and pursues further resolution under the Student Non-academic Misconduct Policy as needed

17. Maintains awareness of emerging trends, practices, legislation, and regulatory requirements with regard to student housing in the post-secondary sector by participating in relevant regional and national professional organizations and professional development opportunities

18. Maintains currency related to any obligations based in law and College policy including but not limited to accessibility for persons with disabilities, sexual violence prevention and response, occupational health and safety regulations, and the incorporation of Indigenous practices as appropriate

19. Participates in College committees and task groups with direct relevance to student wellbeing (e.g., orientation, sexual violence prevention, and student misconduct related committees)

Skills and Abilities:

- Able to work effectively both independently and as part of a team with an aptitude for working in a collegial and collaborative environment;
- Demonstrated management and/or supervisory skills;
- Proven project management skills with the ability to plan and think strategically;
- Knowledge of budgetary processes, including the development and administration of budgets;
- Ability to apply principles of logical thinking to define problems;
- Well-developed interpersonal, written and oral communication skills;
- Excellent organizational, administrative and problem-solving skills with superior attention to detail and accuracy;
- Must be flexible and able to manage high work volume and conflicting priorities in order to meet deadlines;
- Excellent research skills with ability to synthesize data and deliver findings and recommendations;
- Excellent computer skills with proficiency using Microsoft Office, and complex databases, as well as the ability to generate and analyze reports;
- Highly developed level of integrity and discretion and able to maintain strict confidentiality and to handle sensitive issues with tact and diplomacy;
- Ability to communicate effectively and diplomatically with a variety of external agencies.
- Certifications in First Aid, CPR, MHFA, ASIST and NVCI are assets.

Special Instructions to Applicants:

Temporary housing accommodations (288 sq ft studio with in-suite bathroom) in our Student Housing building is included for an out-of-town successful candidate as a taxable benefit until such time the candidate can secure their own housing.
