Title: Senior Communications Officer

Job Status: Full Time (Temporary - 6 months)

Supervisor: Manager, Communications, People, and Culture

Job Summary:

As a single-point-of-access that connects Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICan) members with the federal government, national associations, non-profits and the private sector, Canadian Partnerships creates opportunities where partners can leverage members’ industry and academic expertise, and where members can enrich learning and expand employment prospects for their students while actively supporting economic development nationally, regionally and locally.

Reporting to the Director, Communications, People, and Culture, the Senior Communications Officer, is responsible for planning and leading the implementation of strategic marketing and communications plans to support the successful delivery of pan-Canadian projects.

The incumbent is fluently bilingual with exceptional writing and editing skills in English.

The work of the Senior Communications Officer is reviewed by the Director, Communications, People, and Culture and the Director, Canadian Partnerships Project Delivery, based on objectives and work plans set annually.

  • play a leadership, consulting and problem-solving role with members, partners, senior officials, funding agencies, stakeholders and Colleges and Institutes Canada staff;
  • ability to function with a significant level of flexibility and autonomy, performing various and complex tasks under pressure with attention to detail;
  • prioritize multiple tasks and demands simultaneously;
  • make efficient and strategic communication recommendations;
  • engage members and stakeholders in participating in Pan-Canadian programs.
  • provide professional writing services in English
  • sound judgement, tact and diplomacy;
  • excellent knowledge of communications principles and practices;
  • have a good understanding of CICan's goals and objectives, as well as its programs and services;
  • sound knowledge of colleges and institutes and their role in the post-secondary education system;
  • treat everyone fairly and equitably and maintain high ethical standards; and
  • perform duties in accordance with CICan’s policies, values and code of ethics.

Key Responsibilities: The Senior Communications Officer, will:

  • lead communications and marketing strategies for Canadian Partnerships projects
  • develop communications plans based on careful analysis of funder expectations and target audience requirements, working in collaboration with the Communications, People and Culture team;
  • advise on public affairs, media relations, and issues management approaches;
  • develop communications products with clear, concise, and articulate verbal, writing and editing skills supporting the creation of strategic narratives and compelling storylines on project progress and results;
  • create and develop promotional concepts and plans, including conceiving and producing a wide variety of promotional materials;
  • research and write a variety of communications materials that support the project communications, including, reports, newsletters, web content, blogs, presentations and publications, in collaborations with the Communications department;
  • provide editing and proofreading in both English and French;
  • manage digital and social medial communications and monitor media coverage;
  • maintain member communicators’ lists of specific relevance to Canadian Partnerships’ projects and programs;
  • work collaboratively to deliver products or events under tight deadlines and budget constraints;
  • work closely with graphic designers, web developers and marketing agencies to ensure needs align with deliverables;
  • develop analytical tools and statistical reports to measure impact and effectiveness of communications activities; and,
  • perform other related duties as may be assigned from time to time.

Minimum Requirements:

  • fluency in both written and verbal English and French, with ability to write at a highly professional level in English;
  • graduate from a post-secondary institution or an equivalent combination of education and experience, in the field of communications, journalism, public relations, marketing, or business/commerce;
  • strong project management and leadership skills;
  • highly developed organizational and time management skills;
  • minimum of two (2) years’ experience in a senior communications role leading marketing/communications strategies;
  • experience leading and managing large promotional campaigns;
  • expertise in producing performance reports and tracking the success of communications activities; and
  • proficient user of social networks such as Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Instagram, as well as the ability to recommend their effective use in communications activities.

Desirable Experience, Skills, and Knowledge:

  • basic graphic and web design skills;
  • proficient in managing information and administrative processes;
  • excellent internal and external client service skills;
  • ability to work independently and thrive in a fast-paced environment;
  • demonstrated ability using Microsoft Office Suite for Windows, etc.
  • experience working in or with federal or provincial governments or within the education sector;
  • Understanding of or experience in delivery of federally funded programs; and,
  • Understanding of or experience working in the healthcare/personal care sector
