An exciting evolution is underway at Yukon College (YC) as it becomes Canada’s first university in the North, leading through outstanding place-based education and northern-focused research and scholarship, while upholding exemplary community engagement with First Nation partners throughout Yukon. The transition to Yukon University (YukonU), which will take place in May 2020, will create a flexible post-secondary institution that includes a place and a pathway for every learner, including adult basic education, skills and vocational training certificates and diplomas, plus degree and post-graduate programs.

Yukon College contributes significantly to the development of a healthy and prosperous North through relevant, innovative and inclusive education and research. The College currently serves 1,200 full and part-time credit students and over 4,400 non-credit students each year. The student body includes 150 full-time international students. Yukon College operates 13 campuses across Yukon, including the beautiful main campus in Whitehorse, and houses the Yukon Research Centre, which conducts research across Canada’s North.

As the College approaches our university transition, there is a requirement to recruit a talented Dean, Applied Science and Management who can champion the evolution of the science and management degrees and programs, trades certifications, and culinary arts at Yukon College. Each program plays a critical role in the institution’s commitment to Yukon’s social fabric.

In taking on this important role, the Dean will be given the mandate to support and promote research; advance the degrees, programs and certificates within the Division; inspire a commitment to a highly collaborative, supportive and transparent culture and foster creativity across the Division; and advance partnerships with the First Nations, business community, governments and other institutions.

Knowledge and Skills

The ideal candidate has track record of success as a Dean, Associate Dean, Department Head, or other senior leadership role within a post-secondary institution. They have a reputation for providing leadership and vision, creating a trust-based culture that supports engaged and inspired educators and staff who are committed to a healthy and supportive experience for every student. From an administrative perspective, the candidate should demonstrate an understanding of financial and human resources management and effective resource allocation related to programs and research. Community outreach and fundraising for research and programs comes naturally to this candidate.

Duties and Responsibilities

This is an exciting opportunity for an inspiring leader whose passion, creativity, strategic skills and commitment to indigenization and reconciliation will lead the Applied Sciences and Management Division to its next level of market-responsive, high-calibre instruction and build the foundation for future research productivity. It will afford an opportunity to be part of the team that is creating Canada’s first northern university and live in a community that offers a variety of options for the outdoor or arts and culture enthusiast.

A minimum of a master’s degree with an exemplary record as an educator in a related field. A PhD and experience in research and/or scholarly activity is considered an asset.
