Description

The Executive Director of Research, Innovation and the Henry Bernick Entrepreneurship Centre (HBEC) will be the key operational leader for the overall success of the innovation strategy at Georgian College. This position will develop and implement an integrated mission, vision and strategic plan for the newly-combined areas, and will be the liaison to support the Academic entrepreneurship strategy. This role involves planning, organizing, directing, controlling and administering all research, innovation and HBEC operations including strategic partnerships, community outreach, programming and fundraising. The Executive Director will work collaboratively with others, and will lead a process that will embed research, innovation, intrapreneurship/entrepreneurship capabilities and practices throughout Georgian College, while supporting the growth and success of students, faculty/staff and community.

 

Knowledge and Skills

The Executive Director will establish positive relationships regionally and across disciplines with faculty, staff, students, governments, researchers, established entrepreneurs, community leaders, and industry/sector leaders. S/he supports the College, specific goals for research, “entrepreneurship as a signature learning experience”, and workplace/community-based initiatives. The incumbent will work closely with the Academic areas, Marketing and Advancement and Alumni Relations on these initiatives.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plans strategically for the future to effectively and innovatively address changing and unmet community needs, and to implement business development initiatives and systems to ensure the viability of the Henry Bernick Entrepreneurship Centre
  • Creates a motivational work environment to enhance student and staff satisfaction and productivity, accelerating positive change and innovation both internally at the college and externally in the community, and supporting a culture of accountability and performance internally
  • Works closely with the Vice President Academic, the Academic Deans and Associate Deans, faculty and students to embed entrepreneurship as a signature learning experience by incorporating common entrepreneurship learning outcomes in all Georgian programs
  • Builds and sustains critical relationships with internal stakeholders and externally in the community
  • Provides guidance and knowledge to all campuses and communities to identify entrepreneurship service gaps and innovative solutions
  • Prepares, implements and controls the annual operating plan to align with the College’s, HBEC’s and the Research and Innovation Strategic Plans
  • Increases organizational capacity to maximize the impact of the HBEC internally and in the community, thereby enhancing the financial health and viability of the Centre
  • Fosters the collaboration between HBEC and the department of Research and Innovation to support student and local entrepreneurs who wish to bring new products and services to market
  • Provides leadership in contract development, negotiation and management with external clients of the HBEC
  • In collaboration with the Corporate Marketing Department., develop and implement promotional campaigns for internal- and community-based services and initiatives
  • Communicates with the Senior Leadership Team in a timely manner to present the work accomplished or any challenges experienced in implementing the strategic priorities of HBEC and Research and Innovation
  • Strategic lead for research and innovation at Georgian providing strategic direction and oversight in support for the broader mandate of research innovation and scholarship
  • Promotes awareness of research and innovation expertise and capacity among local business, industry, NPOs, entrepreneurs, and related organizations and economic development agencies
  • Engages with industry to evolve and enhance research capacity (e.g., equipment; software; resources)
  • Develops, maintains, and leverages relationships with key business, industry and community contacts in support of research, innovation and entrepreneurship activity
  • Develops and fosters positive relations with faculty, students, industry and community partners, grant administrators, and other departments
  • Providing guidance on funding requests and research proposal submissions to funding agencies

Education

  • Significant work experience as a small business owner/operator or business founder, or significant work experience as an advisor to small business owners/operators
  • Experience in planning strategically for the future, developing leadership and organizational capacity, and partnership development
  • Experience developing funding opportunities through multiple sources such as government grants, private donations, service delivery, etc., and participation in the solicitation of such external funding
  • Experience in implementing a consulting/mentorship program
  • Experience and success with externally funded research projects
  • Experience with industry / business partnerships
  • A four-year degree or higher (or an equivalent combination of work experience and education); preferably in business or a related field
  • Client service skills, financial acumen and program development skills
  • Strong communication skills, written and oral
  • Strong critical thinking and analytical skills
  • Supervisory experience and the ability to inspire others and positively lead change initiatives
  • Experience teaching or training in an educational or business environment
