Position Summary

Reporting to the Manager of International Student Services, this position is one of a team of International Student Advisors who provide comprehensive advising services and support assistance for international student prospects, their families and in and out of country contracts as well as admission and registration support to International Students. The International Student Advisor must impart expert technical advice on all immigration issues affecting international students



  • Plan, coordinate and implement student success services and programs which enhance the personal, academic and professional experience of international students, faculty and staff.
  • Deliver extensive advising services to all full-time international students and their families to support them through the transition in, through and out of the College.
  • Maintain the highest standard of immigration support to international students to ensure they remain in compliance with their status in Canada.
  • Advise staff and faculty on the needs of international students personally, academically and professionally to ensure College programs and services consider the needs of this large stakeholder group
  • Identify potential barriers that might prevent international students from reaching their goals and work with “at risk” international students
  • Write and edit communications to be distributed to international students for purposes of updating students on rules, regulations or updates.
  • Develop, implement and evaluate student retention strategies and activities such as orientation, student ambassador program, grad event and scholarship programs.
  • Provide guidance and assistance to the international student cohort to ensure a smooth transition to life in Canada and the Centennial College environment.
  • Lead the design and implementation of international student programs on and off-campus such as; peer to peer programs, cultural and recreational activities.
  • Plan and deliver presentations to international students regarding immigration policies and applications, student rights and responsibilities, health insurance and student services.



  • Three year diploma or degree in Social Sciences, Adult Education, Human Resources, Business, public administration or equivalent education and related practical experience advising students in a post-secondary environment.
  • Registered International Student Immigration Advisor (RISIA) or Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant (RCIC) Certificate in good standing with the Immigration Consultants of Canada Regulatory Council is required.
  • Minimum three (3) years’ experience directly working with international students in an academic environment, including experience advising and coaching students and building student success strategies
  • Demonstrated thorough knowledge of Canadian Immigration Policies and Regulations specifically related to international students and their families
  • Demonstrated experience in developing, implementing, evaluating and assessing programs, group workshops, and large events (with intentional outcomes and assessments).
  • Demonstrated experience in intercultural communication, negotiation and counselling with cross-cultural conflict management skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of emerging trends in international education, as well as broad knowledge of academic programs, policies and procedures.
  • Ability to work independently and to develop effective working relationships with students, staff, faculty and external partners.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to navigate a multi-cultural mix of international prospects and students, demonstrating cultural sensitivity and an ability to meet individual internal student needs consistently, fairly and equitably.
  • Experience working with established policies/procedures/guidelines.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to de-escalate conflicts and experience responding to crisis situations.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
