Red Deer Polytechnic (formerly Red Deer College) is located in Red Deer, Alberta, halfway between the major centres of Calgary and Edmonton. As of July 2021, the institution's name is Red Deer Polytechnic, reflecting its designation as Alberta’s newest polytechnic. In 2018, RDP received approval to become a degree-granting institution. Now as a polytechnic, the institution will continue to offer the same breadth of credentials and mix of programs in a variety of subject areas, while growing its focus on practical learning and applied research. The Polytechnic will continue to offer apprenticeships, certificates, diplomas, micro-credentials and degrees as its future takes shape.

Since 1964, the Polytechnic has proudly served its students and communities. The post-secondary institution has two campuses that house many impressive teaching, learning and applied research facilities. The Opportunity – President

The President is the Chief Executive Officer of Red Deer Polytechnic and is accountable to the RDP Board of Governors for providing strategic leadership and vision, inspiring innovation and creativity as well as fostering dedication, collaboration and accountability to ensure that the Polytechnic's mandate is achieved.

The President is expected to:

  • Set a climate of creative achievement through leadership and the development of a proactive, dynamic and flexible organization
  • Actively establish and maintain highly effective, consultative and productive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders including academic and support staff, students, the community, elected members of government and senior government officials
  • Anticipate and balance the needs of these multiple stakeholders without compromising the organizational requirements to drive success
  • Establish and maintain a high profile and positive image of the institution, including acting as RDP’s spokesperson with the media, other institutions, government departments, schools and agencies
  • Ensure short- and long-term financial stability of the Polytechnic, including effective financial and business planning and management processes
  • Keep the Board informed and supported in its work
  • Ensure that the Polytechnic operates within the intent of all enabling and regulatory legislation and governing policies

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides exceptional leadership and direction to a highly motivated and skilled executive leadership team; translates the vision into a critical path, in a series of well-defined goals, and garners commitment from others to execute the intricacies of the strategy.
  • Acts as a steward and guide for the institution as it grows into its Polytechnic status; continues to welcome and encourage diverse student and faculty groups.
  • Participates fully in the development of a vision and strategic direction for the future as an active voting member of the Board of Governors. As President, ensures appropriate strategic and business planning processes are implemented; sets the direction for programs, facilities and education services.
  • Practices inspirational leadership and a collaborative management style to ensure that all faculty and staff, as well as technological and financial resources, are focused on delivering high-quality educational programs and services that are relevant and accessible to diverse learners and meet the needs of the business community (e.g., work-integrated learning, apprenticeships, etc.), while also being practical and sustainable, and building on the Polytechnic’s strengths.
  • Ensures the Polytechnic continues to be a leader within the post-secondary system by fostering an environment that encourages and supports proactive pursuit of emerging opportunities, partnerships and alliances and excellence in programming and service delivery.
  • Builds strong relationships with the organization's external community and stakeholders, as well as with elected and appointed senior government officials.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with key internal stakeholders, such as the Board of Governors, faculty, staff and Red Deer Polytechnic students.
  • Ensures reporting to all required government and public agencies and maintains appropriate information systems.
  • Provides the Board with carefully considered strategic advice; keeps the Board informed of emerging and potential issues; understands the President’s role in a policy governance framework and can work effectively with a committed, progressive and forward-thinking Board.

  • Working effectively with appointed boards that operate within a policy governance framework.
