Job Description

RDC has embarked on an exciting multi-year transformation to a comprehensive regional teaching university with applied learning and research opportunities.

The Vice President Academic is seeking a strategic thinker, organizer, and team player to support the VPA operations and contribute to the successful implementation of university status for Red Deer College. Reporting directly to the VPA and working closely with the Associate Vice President Academic, Research & Student Affairs and Deans, this position is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the VPA’s office and contributing to the successful delivery of strategic plans and initiatives. Embracing challenges and navigating ambiguity while delivering key priorities is a must.

The Academic Manager will:

  • Be a key player in the preparation and implementation of degree granting readiness for the academic portfolio
  • Facilitate and coordinate strategic issues, initiatives, and day-to-day operations of the VPA’s office
  • Embrace challenge and ensure key priorities are delivered
  • Cultivate a culture of trust, effectiveness, and execution

Responsibilities of the Academic Manager include:

  • Oversee administrative functions of the VPA Office, budget, research, and policy interpretation
  • Prepare and provide reports and guidance to the VPA, AVPA, and Deans on initiatives and issues
  • Support Deans’ Council
  • Function as the Appeal Coordinator for student-related appeal procedures and provide advice or guidance for other administrative tribunals
  • Support current VPA administrative procedures while creating new ways of achieving results that meet university standards, effectively straddling two models while moving from college to university governance

The successful candidate will be a forward thinker, energized by working in a time where change is happening, can lead through example, and grow a high trust culture. Skills and expertise required:

  • Undergraduate degree in a related field
  • Knowledge of the Alberta post-secondary system
  • Understanding of the complexities of growing from a college to a teaching university would be an asset
  • Experience in the administrative academic environment, including experience working with management teams in a complex, unionized environment
  • 5-7 years’ experience working in an executive level office environment
  • 3-5 years’ experience in a large, complex organization, preference will be given to experience in a unionized post-secondary environment
  • Project management experience, especially in project coordination
  • Ability to work autonomously, adapt to multiple competing priorities and work with multiple stakeholders to deliver results on time
  • Resourceful at acquiring and delivering information clearly, concisely, and on time
  • Superior organizational and time-management skills
  • Experience handling confidential information in a professional manner with the highest of integrity
  • Proficiency with MS Office applications
  • Supervisory experience
  • Knowledge of administrative or natural justice as it pertains to tribunals
  • Masters degree in a related field preferred
  • Preference will be given to candidates who have direct experience working on a college-to-university transition team
