For over 47 years Thompson Rivers University has taken pride in providing an excellent education to students with a variety of backgrounds and perspectives who are at various stages of their learning journey. TRU is a comprehensive, learner-centred, environmentally responsible institution that serves its regional, national, and international learners and their communities through high quality and flexible education, training, research and scholarship. More than 27,000 students study on campuses in Kamloops and Williams Lake, or in distance or online courses and programs through Open Learning. Research, creation and innovation thrive in TRU’s open, flexible learning environment.
The Faculty of Adventure, Culinary Arts and Tourism has some of the most unique, industry relevant, and academically rigorous educational programs in its field in Canada. The Faculty is composed of nearly 100 full-time and sessional faculty across three departments: Adventure Studies, Culinary Arts and Tourism Management. Students study and learn in these areas through a variety of lenses, thus developing as strong future leaders who will have the breadth and depth of knowledge to be innovative and successful within the public and private sectors.
As the Faculty’s chief academic and administrative officer, the Dean is responsible to the Provost and Vice-President Academic for providing dynamic and visionary leadership in the articulation and implementation of the Faculty’s evolving strategic plan for professional and career development, education, research and outreach in alignment with TRU’s mission, vision, and strategic priorities. The Dean will be an inspiring and effective leader with an exemplary background as a teacher and scholar, possessing significant academic leadership and administrative experience as well as an understanding of the industry contexts of adventure, culinary arts, and tourism. The Dean will advance the Faculty’s current level of excellence to be the foremost destination in Western Canada for educational and career development opportunities in each of the Faculty’s areas of specialization.
The successful candidate for this key leadership position will be strategic, entrepreneurial, and have demonstrated experience as an inspirational leader, communicator and mentor. S/he will also have demonstrable experience in academic administration, and championing student success by creating and supporting the development processes and innovations that lead to high-quality learning environments. A terminal degree in a related discipline is preferred, while a strong appreciation for the intellectual and operational diversity across the spectrum of disciplines within the Faculty is essential.
