Management Director of Applied Research, Libraries, and Emerging Technologies

Job Description

Northwest Community College (NWCC), Terrace campus, invites applications for the full-time, continuing management position of Director of Applied Research, Libraries, and Emerging Technologies.

Duties: Reporting to the Dean of Instruction, the Director has three key responsibilities:

  1. Serve as the campus-wide expert on applied research, including best practices, ethics protocols, funding opportunities and agencies, and external partnerships
    • Support students, faculty, and staff in their applied research endeavors to advise on ethics protocols, including working with Indigenous people, populations at risk, with biological matter, and in power-over situations
    • Act as the institutional point person for ethics and applied research, including serving on Ethics boards
    • Knowledgeable of community-based research, scholarship of learning and teaching, and research conducted in conjunction with industry or Aboriginal communities
    • Able to guide faculty on research grants and opportunities
  2. Provide strategic vision, campus-wide leadership, and overall administrative oversight of the Libraries
    • Establish and maintain strong collaborative partnerships to enhance the reach of the libraries at the Prince Rupert, Terrace, Hazelton, and Smithers campuses
    • Enable a well-rounded, cross-campus approach to all academic, developmental, and trades programs at the college
    • Develop, engage, and measure a strategic plan for the libraries that aligns with the college strategic plan, to help the college reach its goal of becoming the top college of choice for experiential, place-based learning by 2027
  3. Identify emerging technologies and collaborate with key campus members to ensure an approach of pedagogy before technology
    • Work closely with other Directors on campus (e.g., IT, Facilities) as well as the Dean of Learning Transformation to identify emerging technologies relevant to all academic, developmental, and trades programs at the college
    • Consult to determine how and where technologies will be stored, appropriate access and use, etc.
    • Imagine and champion the pedagogical aspects of technology

Qualifications: We are looking for a growth-oriented candidate who exemplifies the values of our new strategic plan (transformative, adventurous, and integrity) and who believes in the power of experiential, place-based education and is comfortable working in a multi-campus, rural environment.

Required knowledge, skills, and abilities include:

  • A Master’s degree in Libraries and Information Science (MLS, MLIS, MI, MISt) from an American Libraries Association (ALA) accredited institution
  • A demonstrated understanding of emerging trends in applied research, academic libraries, and new technologies as they apply to the college context
  • A minimum of three years’ relevant, progressive experience in a complex academic library environment; experience working with emerging technologies; and of in engaging in, and/or supporting, applied research
  • Skilled at change management and leadership at an institution with multiple locations and with competing priorities; ability to build strong collaborative relationships across an organization and with external partners
  • Committed to supporting innovative student-centered programming with a desire to take a decolonizing approach
  • Demonstrated commitment to modeling respectful, inclusive leadership and experience leading in a unionized environment
