A rewarding opportunity for a public policy and research expert to advocate for college education and training while promoting a common voice across Colleges Ontario on key issues.
Ontario’s 24 colleges of applied arts and technology serve more than 200 communities across the province, giving people of all ages and stages, including those living in rural and remote areas, access to post-secondary education and training. The colleges serve more than 200,000 full-time and 300,000 part-time students and clients. Colleges Ontario is the advocacy organization for Ontario’s colleges, and is also a resource for government, educators, and public opinion leaders.
Every year, Colleges Ontario produces high-quality, far-reaching research on key issues and priorities in higher education and training. It also develops policy position papers on key issues, from economic competitiveness to education policies to the workforce needs in the health-care system, as well as yearly budget submissions for the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development. As Senior Research and Policy Advisor, you’ll play a key role within Colleges Ontario by leading the development of strategies and positions to support advocacy for Ontario’s public college sector.
Reporting to the Vice-President of Research and Policy, you’ll develop well-researched expert advice and recommendations to influence public policy and public opinion on a broad range of issues. At the same time, you’ll contribute significantly to effective stakeholder management by drawing on your excellent understanding of the interests and positions of key internal and external stakeholders, and your ability to advocate for Colleges Ontario’s positions with different audiences.
As Senior Research and Policy Advisor, you will work actively to promote the value of college education and training, maximize recognition of the importance of the college sector’s and Colleges Ontario’s role in the public policy debate on these issues, and assist the colleges in developing a shared vision and a common voice on important issues. In this role, you will have responsibility for a range of policy areas of strategic importance to the college sector, including post-secondary system design, credentials frameworks, college degree granting, curriculum and program development, credit transfer, mental health and disabilities, and health science education.
A strong researcher with proven analytical skills and an advocacy mindset, you have a master’s degree or equivalent, and at least 12 years’ experience within the post-secondary or a related sector, including the analysis of public policy issues, especially in the post-secondary and/or health fields. You have a facility for developing cogent options for consideration from thorough research, and are known for producing high-quality results in a fast-paced environment. You are a skilled communicator, enjoy working both independently and in a team environment, and can negotiate, mediate and influence effectively, bringing people and ideas together to achieve results.
